Among the TOP 50 best-selling business books (Manager Magazin 6/2015)
Of bag slicing and an outdated business model
The highest interest rates, fees without a legal basis, permanent breaches of contract, incorrect interest calculations, investment recommendations to the disadvantage of the customer, a full-bodied, advertised joint liability system that actually does not have to and cannot be liable, a cost-intensive organisational structure that nobody needs, and more than 1,300 savings bank directors with top salaries of up to € 800,000: How long will the more than 30 million customers be able to keep up with this? Because someone has to pay for this insanity. In case of doubt, the customer. In reality too, by the way.
All attempts to trim the savings bank organisation to efficiency fail because of the unclear ownership structure. Because the savings banks belong to practically no one. They manage themselves. There is only democratic control.
Leading experts warn that soon more than 60% of all savings banks will no longer be competitive. 40 % of all outlets have to be closed. Even the Bundesbank is concerned and has initiated initial investigations.
However, the former president of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV) is rebelling and defending himself against any criticism. Everything is in best order. And he continues to propagate the fairy tale of the "good" savings banks that have committed themselves to the common good and, unlike all the profit-seeking commercial banks, are not profit-oriented.
Georg Fahrenschon, President of the DSGV:
"The founding motivation of savings banks more than 200 years ago was neither the pursuit of profit nor primarily the sale of products. That still counts today. Savings banks are not banks. We are keeping to that."
The gap between appearance and reality has never been bigger. It is time to shed light on the dark sides of the savings banks. The book invites to a different kind of "cash check" and guarantees savings bank customers a new view of their credit institution.
